18th International Congress of Christian Archaeology

EARLY CHRISTIANITY BETWEEN LITURGICAL PRACTICE AND EVERYDAY LIFE

BELGRADE, 2–6 SEPTEMBER 2024

This third circular is to remind you of the organisation of the Congress and that the abstracts should be submitted by 31 December 2023 at the email address info@18ciac.com.

The Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade, will host the 18th International Congress of Christian Archaeology in 2024. The Congress will be organised in cooperation with the main institutions of heritage protection, culture and education in our country, such as the National Museum of Serbia and the Faculty of Philosophy of the Belgrade University. It will also provide an excellent forum for the promotion and presentation of Christian cultural heritage. The main topics of the Congress can be found in the previous Second Circular, as the information about the length of the lectures and presentation of the posters.

We will inform all the colleagues about the acceptance of their proposals by 1 February 2024.

Please note that the bank transaction costs are not included in the registration fees.

The Congress registration fee covers the welcome reception, all lectures, oral and poster sessions, coffee breaks, exhibitions and other events, as well as congress materials (including the Programme and Book of Abstracts) and the excursion to Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium).

The fee does not cover travel and accommodation expenses and the costs of optional excursions that will be organised immediately after the Congress; the printed Congress Proceedings are likewise not included in the fee.

FIRST CIRCULAR

18th International Congress of Christian Archaeology early Christianity between liturgical practice and everyday life
Belgrade, 26 September 2024

The Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade, will host the 18th International Congress of Christian Archaeology in 2024. The congress has a special place in the fields of Early Christian archaeology and Late Roman studies, with a tradition established in 1894. The Congress will be organised in cooperation with the main institutions of protection, culture and education from the Republic of Serbia, such as the National Museum of Serbia and the Faculty of Philosophy of the Belgrade University. It will provide an excellent forum for the promotion and presentation of Christian cultural heritage, together with a thematic exhibition that will be organised at that time at the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade and the excursion to Sremska Mitrovica – the Late Roman capital of Sirmium which hosted emperors, where church councils took place and which was home to many martyrs.

VII CLOSING KEYNOTE LECTURE

The collective monograph (Proceedings) will be published after the Congress, containing both oral and poster presentations.

The Congress will be organized at two venues: The Faculty of Philosophy of the Belgrade University and The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. They are located in the very centre of the city, in the pedestrian zone and close to many hotels that can be reached on foot in ten minutes, and are equipped with computers, projectors, and audio equipment. The welcome reception shall be held at the National Museum of Serbia and the City Hall of Belgrade.

The length of lectures is restricted to 20 minutes. Each participant should give no more than two papers in total, either lectures and/or posters. Posters must be printed by the participants, in A1 format (841 x 594 mm: portrait format). The abstracts of no more than 300 words, required for both oral and poster presentations should be submitted between 1 May and 31 December 2023. The abstract form will be uploaded soon on the Congress website (http://www.18ciac.com/). The Congress languages will be Italian, English, French, German and Spanish. The participants are kindly recommended to prepare the texts of their PowerPoint presentations in English independently of the language of the oral presentation.

The organisers will pay special attention to the encouragement of young researchers – PhD students – to participate in the Congress, through either oral or poster presentations. A reduced registration fee will be available for them. The possibility of awarding ten grants is also considered for PhD students. The requirement for the grant would be the excellence of their submitted abstracts and letters of recommendation from their professors/mentors

Payment instructions will be submitted in due time. The Congress fee includes access to the welcome reception, all lectures, sessions and poster displays, coffee breaks, the museum exhibition and other events, congress kit – including the Programme and Book of Abstracts – and the excursion to Sremska Mitrovica – Sirmium. The fee does not include travel expenses, accommodation costs, and receipt of the published monograph. It likewise does not include the costs of optional excursions that will be organised immediately after the Congress.
